YSU in 1940

Officials at Youngstown College considered using a new method of teaching. Based upon a plan used by Rollins College in Florida, the traditional one-hour lecture with outside assignments would be replaced with a two-hour format. During the first hour, students would prepare presentations which would be the subject of roundtable discussions with the professor during the second. Professors Karl W. Dykema, Joseph E. Smith, and O.L. Reid showed early interest in the Rollins Plan. Also on campus, The Jambar was awarded First Class Honors by the Associated College Press, and Spring Commencement exercises were held in Stambaugh Auditorium for the first time, due to space constraints on campus.
