The U.S. Steel Foundation, Inc. announced plans to award a grant of $75,000 to Youngstown University. It was decided to apply the money toward the construction of a new science facility. The Youngstown University Theatre received a grant of money from the Ohio Division of Mental Hygiene in order to establish a special repertory company, to be known as “Family Plays.” A record enrollment was established, with 5,638 students matriculating at Youngstown University, with the heaviest enrollment found in the Engineering School. In response, twenty new faculty members were hired, while Dr. Clarence P. Gould, chairman of the History department and member of the faculty since 1939, announced his retirement.
