YSU experienced great gains and losses in 1986. Jim Tressel was appointed YSU’s head football coach and Dr. Robert
Rollin of the Dana School of Music was nominated for a Pulitzer for his composition, Five Pieces for Flute and
Piano…. Meshel Hall opened as the university's high-tech facility and ground was broken for the conversion of
Pollock House into the new Wick-Pollock Inn. Also during the year, YSU faculty, staff, and students participated
in Hands across America and mourned the passing of Dr. Carol Gay, co-founder (with her husband and colleague,
Dr. Thomas Gay) of the YSU English Festival, in memory of their late daughter, Candice.
