Historical Background
The American Association of University Professors (AAUP) was founded in 1915 by Arthur O. Lovejoy and John
Dewey at Johns Hopkins University. The purpose was (and remains) twofold:
1. To ensure academic freedom for college and university instructors; and
2. To determine the principles of the profession and the procedures by which they are protected.
The Youngstown State University chapter of the American Association of University Professors was founded in 1954.
Membership reached its peak in 1971, with 145 faculty registered.
During its existence, YSU-AAUP dealt with many issues, including those involving:
Collective bargaining
Fringe benefits and pensions
Academic freedom
Workload
Support for other chapters engaged in disputes with academic administration
During the 1980’s, YSU-AAUP co-existed with the newly-established campus chapter of the Ohio Education Association (OEA), which accelerated the process of faculty unionization. By the end of the decade, YSU-OEA had become the dominant organization for faculty advocacy at the University. YSU-AAUP’s membership steadily declined thereafter. By the beginning of the 1990’s, it quietly passed from the campus scene.
Scope and Content
The archival material preserved herein includes the business records of YSU-AAUP, including the minutes of
meetings, committee reports, and correspondence. Financial records and information from both the Ohio Conference
and the National Headquarters are also filed accordingly. Files that may be of particular interest to the
researcher included YSU-AAUP’s responses to:
The “Felch Case,” which involves the dismissal of a faculty member from Findlay College (Ohio);
The “St. John’s Strike” (Illinois), where industrial action resulted in a long and contentious labor
dispute;
The instigation of “loyalty oaths” and the concomitant threat to academic freedom.
As one examines these records, the civility that existed on the YSU campus between the Administration and the AAUP becomes evident. While disputes did occur, the professionalism of both sides remained intact. This can be seen especially in the quantity and tone of correspondence between President Albert Pugsley and the YSU-AAUP leadership.
