2002 Economic Census  


What is the Economic Census?

The Economic Census is a survey conducted every five years by the U.S. government. The census covers industries and geographic areas across the United States. Programs related to the 2002 Economic Census include statistics on minority- and women-owned businesses. The Agricultural Census and Census of Governments are conducted at the same time as the Economic Census.

For the 2002 Economic Census, information was gathered during 2003 and reports are released from 2004-2006. The schedule for reports is available online at http://www.census.gov/econ/census02/guide/g02sched.htm


 
What kinds of data are included in the Economic Census?

Standard information is reported for all industries covered by the Economic Census:

  • Number of establishments
  • Number of employees
  • Payroll
  • Measure of output such as sales, receipts or revenue

The Economic Census is a primary source for detailed information about the nation's economy. The information in the reports is used by businesses, researchers and legislators to:

  • Compare a company with others in the industry
  • Identify potential customers by industry and geographic area
  • Track changes in the national, state or local economies
  • Project industry trends
  • Prepare and evaluate new laws

Locating Economic Census Information

For the 2002 Economic Census, information is published on the Internet and DVD-ROM, with only a few select reports published in print. Maag Library's access to this information is via the Internet.

Some of the online reports can be located through
