The collection housed within the Wilcox CRC is comprised of several different types of material, utilizing several different or slightly different classification schemes.  Because the CRC collection in its entirety is relatively small, the various collections do facilitate shelf browsing.  Individual collections include:

textbook materials children's books
professional literature videorecordings
computer software kits
reference books other

All CRC call numbers will use the usual MARC21 050/090 fields for LC call numbers.  Local and Dewey-like call numbers will use the MARC21 099 field.   Following the usual parsing rules.

Textbook materials

The CRC textbook collection is made up of a variety of student textbooks with associated teacher materials.  The classification scheme used here is a local scheme that facilitates shelf browsing.  Each number has several component parts, and is formatted in a MARC record using the 099 field.

Component Meaning
Text indicates textbook collection
56 subject number, here math
.A224 publisher number, here Addison Wesley
M37 Series/title cutter (if needed)
1995 publication year
Gr. 5 grade level

Shelf arrangement is first by subject number, then by series/set publisher, then by the series title if needed,  then by publication year, last by grade level.  All items in a given set are shelved together, i.e., student text, teacher's edition, copymasters, resource manual, etc.

Children's books

Children's picture books at the CRC are classed by the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) System, which is often used in school and public libraries.  Fiction books are classed using the  jE option..

For example, the classification number for Eric Carle's Draw Me a Star would break down as:

Component Meaning
jE juvenile easy
Car author, here Carle
1992 publication year
Dra title, here Draw

Nonfiction books are classed using DDC numbers.  The DDC is a hierarchical scheme of 10 broad classes, each broken down into 10 sub-classes, and each of those sub-classes broken down into 10 more classes.  For example, Alan Schroeder's Minty : a story of young Harriet Tubman, would break down as:

Component Meaning
j305.567 social groups <preceding j for juvenile>
Sch author
1996 publication year

The current DDC is the 21st edition, commonly DDC21.  For more information on DDC, look at the DDC21 summaries, part of OCLC/Forest Press's DDC page.

Professional literature

Professional and scholarly books, mostly related to education, are classed using the Library of Congress Classification.  See Maag Library Item Classification for more information on LC-style classification numbers.  For summaries of the LCC system, try the Library of Congress Classification Outline, hosted by the Library of Congress.  See also Matt Rosenberg's LC system outline.

Videorecordings

Videorecordings held by the CRC are classed by the LC system, with the CRC prefix, and VCT suffix, indicating a videocassette.    For example:

Nurturing the love of learning [videorecording] : the Montessori method.
    090     LB775.M8 |b N87 1994x |a VCT

Computer software

Software at the CRC is treated much the same as videos, but for one difference.  At the end of the LC-style call number in the 099 field, instead of the suffix VCT, the multimedia code for IBM or MAC is used.  See the multimedia code list for proper use of codes.  For example, the storybook CD-ROM Sheila Rae the Brave is platform independent, thus:

Sheila Rae, the brave [computer file] / by Kevin Henkes
    090     PZ7.H389 |b Sh 1996 CD-ROM

Kits

AACR2 defines a kit as consisting of multiple format items, none of which predominates.  CRC kits include items fitting this definition as well as other multi-media items that are neither videos nor software.  These items also receive LC-style call numbers, but utilize 2 prefixes in the 099 field.  As with other CRC items, they have the CRC prefix, followed by the word "kit", then the remainder of the classification number.  For example:

Start with manipulatives, for staff development. [kit] / Cuisenaire Company of America
    099     CRC |a Kit |a QA |a 135.5 |a .S82 |a 1995

Reference

CRC reference books are processed similarly to Maag reference books. In other words, the codes for item type and status would be "11" and "o" respectively. These books have LC call numbers.

Ohio curriculum materials centers: a comprehensive directory
099      A675.P3 |b O44 1993

NOTE:  The spine label will have "CRC" "REF" before the LC call number.

Other materials

Other materials held by the CRC include puppets, puzzles, and various audio- visual and computer equipment.
