Government Documents
A selective depository for federal documents since 1973, Maag Library currently receives about 44% of the publications available through the Federal Depository Library Program.
Documents are selected which support YSU's curricula, research, and programs as well as documents of general interest to residents of the 17th Congressional District. We select most of our publications from the following departments: Commerce, Education, Defense, Energy, EPA, Health and Human Services, Justice, and Interior. Congressional hearings and reports are also received.
The documents collection, located on the sixth floor of Maag Library,
consists of over 300,000 volumes in print, microfiche or CD-ROM. Maag Library
is also a depository for selected Ohio documents.
Almost all government agencies have publications available on the internet. Find an agency's homepage by using one of the convenient locator guides. Click here for other tools to assist in searching for government information on the world wide web.
Another option for finding documents is to use Impact/CD GDCS (Government Documents Catalog Service). This easy-to-search CD-ROM index provides information on all documents published by the Government Printing Office (GPO) since 1976. When using Impact/CD, keep in mind that Maag Library selects 44% of all available GPO titles, so we do not necessarily own every title listed. This electronic index corresponds to the printed Monthly Catalog of U.S. Government Publications.
The Monthly Catalog of U.S. Government Publications, located
on the index tables in the Documents Department, is one of the primary
tools for identifying documents, especially those published prior to 1976.
Our holdings begin with 1948. The Monthly
Catalog on the World Wide Web includes documents published
from 1994 to the present. It is important to remember that the Monthly
Catalog will list all publications of the Government Printing Office and
you must still check MaagNet to find out if Maag Library selects a particular
title.
The SuDoc system follows the organizational structure of the federal government. Publications are grouped according to departments or agencies (i.e. C for Commerce, L for Labor). Other letters and numbers are added to further identify bureaus, type of publication, series or title.
An actual SuDoc number may look something like this:
When using MaagNet, government documents in print are identified by
the notation Govt Docs.
Microfiche documents are identified by the term Micro Docs.
Examples:
Govt Docs J 29.9/2:993 Criminal Victimization in the United States 1993
Micro Docs A 93.21:1848 Estimating the Opportunity Cost of Unpaid Farm Labor
The documents librarian is available Monday through Friday, 8:00 - 5:00. Appointments can be made by contacting Jan Schnall at 742-3126, or email jwschnal@cc.ysu.edu.
World-Wide Web workstations are located in the Documents Department, the Reference Room on the main floor, and Serials on the lower level.
