Introduction to BUSINESS DATABASES

It is more important than ever for graduates from the WCBA to be able to find information on stocks, company histories, and industry trends. In this workshop, our business librarian will guide you through databases such as S&P, Valueline, MediaMark, and Business Source Complete, showing you how to search these valuable databases for the information you and your students need.

Introduction to INSTANT MESSAGING

Not up to "texting" or instant messaging yet?  Does the idea of getting an instant response to your question seem time saving? If so, Intro to Instant Messaging is probably for you. Learn how to create an instant message account -- if you don't have one already -- and how to use it to converse in real time with a librarian. Instances where instant messaging would be the best tool for you will be highlighted as will the scheduled hours of service for Fall Semester.

CHANGES IN THE LIBRARY

If you haven’t been to the library recently, you haven’t been to the library! During this session a librarian will take you on a tour of the building and show you the new areas and services that are available to you and your students. We’ll finish up in the instruction room on the 4th floor for a quick tour of the features on the library’s webpage designed for faculty. This is a great refresher for “seasoned” YSU faculty, as well as an excellent way for new faculty to get to know the library and its staff.

Introduction to MICROFORMS

Microform is a bit of a conundrum. On one hand, as everyone knows, microform is a great way to preserve information from the past. On the other hand, the science of microform is shooting into the 21st century. Did you know Maag has the ability to digitize microform images? Come and learn how this technology works and how it can be applied to your research as well as that of your students! We’ll also explore some of Maag’s most interesting and popular microform collections.

Maag Archives, 5th Floor

Introduction to ARCHIVES

Maag Library’s Archives and Special Collections was a key feature of the University’s centennial in 2008. In addition to the new offices and the beautifully refurbished reading room and exhibit area on the 5th floor, we also have Digital.Maag, or DSpace, for our electronic archival material. These electronic collections include recent and historic photos, footage from WKBN, great performances from the Dana School of Music, board and trustee meeting minutes, and much, much more. In this session, you’ll explore the archive’s physical collections and facilities, as well as Digital.Maag. Many students and faculty research the history of YSU. Come and see how this excellent resource can help!

LIBRARY ASSIGNMENT INTERVENTION

Many of us have noticed the trend of students coming to college with little knowledge of how to use any library, academic or public. When researching, students will use what they know, so a well-crafted “library assignment” is often a good start toward moving their research beyond Google and Wikipedia. If you’d like to develop a library assignment of your own or if you have a library assignment that needs to be updated, this hands-on workshop is a great opportunity to start to create an assignment for your class, get feedback and share ideas with librarians and peers. We’ll also introduce you to the library’s instruction program, including the materials we’ve developed for information literacy.

Journalism Databases and Lexis-Nexis, with Microforms

Students who plan to work in the field of broadcasting or journalism need to know how to quickly find accurate information. In this session, we’ll explore the new Lexis-Nexis format, as well as other relevant databases. After that, we’ll take a trip down to the 3rd floor microforms area for a refresher on how to use various newspapers on microform, including the digitization process.

Maag Multimedia Center

3rd Floor

Introduction to the MULTIMEDIA CENTER

Thanks to the talent and hard work of several “generations” of librarians, Maag has a beautiful Multimedia Center of which we are justly proud. Services in the Multimedia Center include: podcasting booths to create downloadable video and audio presentations, a self-digitization station for those old LP’s in your closet that you’d love to convert to a CD, and of course our music collection.
