General Information

Begin your search for maps by using MaagNet.  Try a subject search using the name of the geographic area , plus the term maps.  For example, to find  maps of Ohio, the subject search would be:  Ohio Maps.  An alternative method to try is a word or subject search for an area, then limit your search to Material Type, then select PRINT MAPS.

For more detailed information on maps published by the U.S. government, see Maps in Government Documents.

Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps for Youngstown and Vicinity (now available online through OhioLINK)

Since the 1870's, the Sanborn Company has mapped cities and industrial areas across the United States. Maps show each building within a city's "built-up area," and symbols indicate use (dwelling, store, etc.), construction materials and other data.

New maps were produced every few years, depending on how fast a city was growing.  Between production of new maps, the company would send out small "update sheets" that could be pasted over the existing map to show changes.  To tell if a map has been pasted up, consult the key-map page at the front of the volume.  It includes a "Corrections" ledger, which the map owner would sign and date each time revision sheets were pasted in.

Maag Library has Sanborn Maps on microfilm and in the Special Collections Room.  The Mahoning Valley Historical Society located in the Arms Museum, Wick Avenue, also has some of the maps.  Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps 1867-1970 are now available online through OhioLINK Digital Media Center (limited to registered OhioLINK users).

Maps located in Government Documents, Lower Level

The federal government publishes a large number of maps, ranging from an 8 1/2" X 11" notebook size to large wall maps.  Maps are also published on CD-ROM.   These maps are cataloged and can be found by searching MaagNet.

Maps are produced by many different agencies but the majority of the maps in Maag's collection are issued by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).  The subject matter ranges from individual countries to political maps of the world.

To browse for maps of countries or areas such as Eastern Europe or Latin America,  go to the MAP BOXES in the Documents area of the 6th floor.  These maps range in size from pamphlets to wall maps and are arranged in alphabetical order by area.  There is also a set of three-ring notebooks containing smaller maps of individual countries.   The MAP BOXES and the map notebooks have a classification number of PREX 3.10/4:

The state of Ohio also publishes mineral resource maps, soil survey maps, park maps, and much more.  For assistance in finding maps in Government Documents, ask at the reference desk on the main floor or call 330-941-3686
