| In 1938, when Youngstown State University was Youngstown
College, the Friends of Youngstown College Library was established by the Youngstown
Branch of the American Association of University Women along with William F. Maag, Jr. The
Friends raised many thousands of dollars to buy books for the college as it grew into a
university.
With William F. Maag, Jr.'s guidance, the Friends continued in existence for nearly 30
years until the college joined the state system in the late sixties. The organization
raised over $115,000 for books and the dream of a new library building was achieved in
November of 1976 when construction of the William F. Maag Library was completed.
After its objectives were accomplished, the group entered a long period of
hibernation. In 1985 a dedicated group of YSU staff, faculty members, administrators and
alumni led by Carol Wall and Dr. James A Houck, revived interest in the organization,
renaming it The Friends of Maag Library.
Charter membership consisted of 60 individuals. Membership has since grown to more
than 350.
