Frequently Asked Questions on Circulation

How do I know if I'm eligible to use the library?
Maag Library is open to the public, with the exception of the computer lab which is restricted to current YSU students, faculty and staff. See Policies Governing Use of Computing Facilities for more information. We ask that you comply with library and university policies and regulations.
You must be registered to borrow materials from the circulating collection. The following categories of individuals may borrow materials from Maag Library:
  • Current YSU students, faculty, and staff
  • Current members of Friends of Maag Library
  • Current members of the YSU Alumni Association
  • Current students, faculty and staff of participating OhioLINK institutions
What do I need to borrow books?
Current YSU students, faculty and staff
    • A valid YSU ID (valid only if your current validation sticker is attached to the back of the ID)

    • If you do not have a validation sticker for the current term:
      • Students: check with the Bursar's Office, 2nd Floor, Meshel Hall.
      • Faculty and staff: check with Human Resources, 3rd Floor, Jones Hall.
    • A library barcode attached to your ID. (Your barcode is good as long as you are a current student, faculty member or staff member).
To get a library barcode, you must register at the Circulation desk, Main Floor Lobby.

    Other borrowers
      • You must be a member of Friends of Maag Library or the YSU Alumni Association. Current members of these organizations may request a courtesy card at the Circulation Desk, main floor lobby.
See What do I need to borrow books? for more information.

What materials may be checked out?
    • Most of the books in the stack areas of Maag Library (floors 3-6A) are in the circulating collection.
    • Materials that do not circulate: items in the  Reference Room (Main Floor); the Periodicals/Microforms area (Lower Level); the MultiMedia Collection (Fifth Floor);  items in On-site Storage, Special Collections, or Closed Reserve.  Additionally, some items in the General and Oversize Collections are marked as non-circulating.
How many items may I borrow at one time?
    • There is currently no limit to the number of Maag Library-owned items you may borrow.

MaagNet says the book I want is available. What if I can't find it on the shelf in Maag Library?
    • You may place a hold on an item through MaagNet. While viewing the book's record in MaagNet, click on the Request button (in the MaagNet Navigation bar) and enter your name and library barcode. This service takes a couple of days.
How do I know when the book has been located?
    • You may view Your Circulation Record (you will be prompted for your name and library barcode). Click on Requests (holds) outstanding. Look at the status column. This will tell you whether or not the book is ready for pickup. Pick up and check out at the Circulation Desk.

Where do I check out books?
    • To check out books, you must take them to the Circulation Desk, Main Floor Lobby. Circulating documents must be checked out in the Government Documents area, Sixth Floor, when that area is open. (When the Documents area is not open, check out those materials at the Circulation desk, Main Floor).
How long can I keep borrowed materials?
    • Each category of borrowers may have a different time period. See Loan Period in the Fast Facts chart below.

Is it possible to renew checked out items?
    • Yes. Checked out items may be renewed three times. (Exception: borrowers from other OhioLINK institutions).
How can I renew checked out items?
    • You may renew in person or by telephone (330-742-3678); or online (click on View Your Circulation Record from the MaagNet menu; click on Checked out items and follow instructions).

How do I know when to return books I've checked out?
    • For items that have not been renewed: check the "Date Due" slip inside the back cover of the book.
    • For items that have been renewed: Check Your Circulation Record. Click on Checked out items. The due date is listed in the Status column.
Where do I return checked out books?
    • Return books to the Circulation Desk, main floor lobby, during library hours.
    • A book drop on the west side of the building (facing Ward Beecher Hall) is available when the library is closed.
What happens if I don't return Maag Library materials on time?
    • Fines for overdue materials are 10 cents per day (including Saturdays, Sundays and holidays). Maximum fine is $11 per book.
    • Non-returned or lost books are charged at the price of the book plus the fine (up to $11 per book) plus $10 processing fee.
    • Unpaid fines result in losing library privileges as well as being reported to the Bursar's Office. Once reported to the Bursar, other university privileges may be suspended until payment is received.
    • Note: fines for OhioLINK materials are much higher. See OhioLINK fines for more information.
What can I do if a book is checked out, missing, or not owned by Maag Library?
    • Search the OhioLINK Central Catalog, the combined catalogs of the OhioLINK consortium colleges and universities. You may borrow books online through the Central Catalog as long as they are available.
    • For additional information see OhioLINK online borrowing.
