COMST 1545 is the only course that fulfills the General Education oral communication requirement. This course focuses on the study of theories, strategies, and skills for the competent participation in interpersonal, group, and public communication situations.



  Informative Speech

For this assignment you will need to provide interesting information to your audience.

  • Search for Books in Maag Library
    Find books which relate to your topic that you can check out of Maag Library.

  • Search for Books in OhioLINK
    Find books which relate to your topic through OhioLINK which has a larger selection of materials than Maag Library.

  • Academic Search Premier    Remote Access
    A multidisciplinary database that indexes over 4300 periodicals and contains full text for over 3400 scholarly publications.
  •  

  • Electronic Journal Center (EJC)  
    Full-text journals from OhioLINK electronic journal subscriptions. Currently includes over 6000 scholarly journals in a variety of disciplines.


  • JSTOR    Remote Access
    JSTOR or Journal Storage is an online journal archive. For those journals included in JSTOR, the full text of articles is available.

  • Google Scholar
    Google Scholar is a simple way to search for scholarly literature such as articles.  Does not give you website results. 
   

 
Persuasive Speech

For this assignment you will need to argue one side of a controversial topic in order to influence your audience.  Use the sources listed under Informative Speech as well as the following.
  • Opposing Viewpoints   Remote Access

  • Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center is the best database to use when searching for information on a controversial topic, including more current issues such as the War in Iraq.  Usually has resources for both sides of the issue.

 
The Group Project

If you choose to do Option 1 of the group assignment, "Finding Youngstown Solutions" you will need to research a problem occurring in the Youngstown area.
  • U.S. Census Bureau
    Multidisciplinary The census will give you basic demographic information about the Youngstown Area such as poverty, employment, aging, disability, education, race and ethnicity, and income. Follow the link and then click on the blue tabs on the left to get more specific data.
