The items listed on this page are not the only resources available for these projects. Your research may lead you to additional resources that are helpful for your projects.

Print Resources

These are resources physically located in the library. While those listed are held in the Reference Room, other items are available in the general collection and can be checked out.

  • The Europa World Yearbook

This set of books contain information on countries throughout the world, arranged in alphabetical order. Each entry includes an overview of the country and information on specific aspects of the country, including economic affairs. Also included are charts for each section providing demographic, economic and government information. Contact information for various governmental agencies is also included.

  • Global Market Share Planner

This set can help you identify companies operating in a specific geographic location. Volume 1 covers market share for various products in different countries, volume 2 looks at the leading global brands, and volumes 3-6 cover major market share companies in specific regions. These volumes could be helpful identifying companies that operate in specific countries.
  • Mergent International Manual
    Ref HG 4009.M66 2005 (4 volumes)

This resource provides business and financial information for countries and companies around the world.

There maybe other books about your country or industry available through
MaagNet or OhioLINK. Both of these catalogs are available from the Maag Library homepage as well as the links above. Because books are not typically published as quickly as articles, you will find your most recent information in articles, but books can be valuable for detailed background information about a topic.
  • Keyword search using the country or industry.
This is not as precise as using the subject search, but it may bring up additional items that discuss your topic without it being one of the primary subjects of the book.

  • Subject search for the country or the industry.
Searching by subject lets you locate books about the specific topic. When you search, you may see a message that your subject is not used in this catalog, but another subject is used for the same thing. One example of this is Myanmar. Insteaed of Myanmar as a subject, books about this country are listed with Burma as their subject.

  • As you're searching for books in MaagNet or OhioLINK, remember that you may come across books from many years ago. If you want to only find more recent books, within the last 5-10 years, try using the advanced searches in MaagNet or OhioLINK and limiting the date to the time period you want. If your restrict this too much, you may not find any items, depending upon what is available.

Subscription Resources

These resources are those that Maag Library pays to access. The information in these resources is usually not available through the free internet, but contain information that you may find useful when working on your projects.

  • Business Source Complete:
Business Source Complete provides access to journal and magazine articles, country and industry reports and SWOT analyses for a variety of companies. There are two interfaces that can be used to search Business Source Complete.
    • The main interface is the simplest way to search for articles in journals and magazines. To get to this interface, begin at the Maag Library home page, select Research Databases from the Quick Links menu. At the Research Databases page, select Listed by Subject then Business. Business Source Complete is the second database listed on the page. You can also access this interface from either of these links: On Campus    Off Campus

Once in this database, use whatever terms you want to search. If you put the terms next to each other, such as Aquafina Water, your search will look for those terms next to each other in the description of the article - this works the same as putting your search into quotation marks when you are using Google. If you just want your search terms to appear in the description, but you don't need them next to each other as a phrase, use the word AND to connect them. If you could use a variety of words to describe your topic, use the word OR to connect your topic words. Using OR will make you get more results from your search

Once you have a list of results, you can select the type of article you want from the links across the top. These may include Academic Journals, Magazines, Trade Publications, Newspapers, SWOT Analyses or other article types. If there are no articles of the type in your results, that link will not appear on the page.

    • The alternate interface for Business Source Complete is the Business Searching Interface (BSI). From the Research Databases page, select D-E under listed by name, then scroll down to Ebsco Databases. This interface is also available from either on campus or off campus. Select the Business Searching Interface from this page.

This page makes it very simple to browse for information about a country, company or industry. If you happen to be working on Honduras as a country, select Country Reports under browse and use the next link until you get to the page with Honduras on it. You can also use the Browse For box to jump to the correct page. Once you click on the country name, you will get a list of reports that include the word Honduras. They may or may not all be reports about the country.

    • You can use either interface and get identical information. If you switch between interfaces, you will lose your previous search results, so save, print or e-mail the articles to yourself before you switch.

  • STAT-USA
STAT-USA is US Government database that provides access to many detailed reports about countries, industries and trade statistics. Maag Library has single user access and, because a password is required, can only be accessed in the Reference Room. Ask at the Reference desk to be logged on.

The simplest way to find information in STAT-USA about international industries and various countries is to browse the documents. Most international documents are located in the GLOBUS/NTDB section. If you would like to search for a specific country or industry, you can do it from this screen, but if you would like to look at information like the Country Commercial Guides, select that link and browse for your country. Some of the documents that you may find helpful in STAT-USA include:

    • Country Commercial Guides
    • International Market Insight Reports
    • Commercial Trade Leads
    • National Trade Estimates on Foreign Trade Barriers

These are in no way the only items available through STAT-USA. Browse or search within the database to find additional reports that may be helpful.

  • Standard and Poor's NetAdvantage:
Standard and Poor's provides excellent company and industry information, including their current Industry Surveys and Surveys from the previous 8 years. Not all companies are included in Standard and Poor's, but most of the major industries are included. The primary focus of the information in these reports is the U.S., but reviewing the information contained in the reports can help you identify the type of information that may be helpful as you develop your reports. This database is available both On campus and Off campus.

  • World Data Analyst Online:This database can help you find basic information about countries or compare a country to any other country. The information can be basic, but this can be excellent background information when you are researching a company. Available on campus and off campus.

  • Lexis Nexis Academic: Newspapers, whether domestic or international, can be an excellent resource for company, industry and country information. Lexis Nexis provides online access many full text articles from newspapers around the world. The first page allows you to search for news articles. You can select either General News or World News from the first drop down menu. With General News, select Major Papers from the second drop down menu. With World News, you can select the region in which your country is located. With Lexis Nexis, if your search is going to give your more than 1,000 articles, you will get a message asking you to refine your search. You can do this by limiting the date or adding additional words to your search. Lexis Nexis is also available on campsu or off campus.

Web Resources
There are resources available on the free internet that may help you with your research. These are just starting places and by no means represent every website possible website available.
  • Google Searches
    • Google U.S. Government Search http://www.google.com/unclesam
The U.S. Government produces many reports on countries, industries and international conditions. This Google site allows you to search only on those pages that are .gov pages, instead of working your way through many .com or .org sites as well.
    • Google News http://news.google.com
A simple way to search for current news about just about any topic.
    • Google Scholar http://scholar.google.com/
Google can be used to locate scholarly articles and books. Not all articles are indexed through Google Scholar. If you are off campus and wish to set Google Scholar to show you links to items available through OhioLINK you will need to set OhioLINK in the preferences under Library Links and authenticate to OhioLINK at http://auth.ohiolink.edu before the links will work.

  • OANDA http://www.oanda.com/
OANDA is an excellent resource for currency information, including current and historical exchange rates. For example, there is not an association for each individual type of drink available.

  • World Bank http://www.worldbank.org/
The World Bank produces many reports about countries, industries and trade conditions as well as data and statistics. Take a look through the Data and Research pages as well as the publications pages to determine if information that can help you is available through this website.

  • Country or Union websites, such as the European Union. The information available from country or union websites varies with each one, but valuable information about the country and doing buisiness there can often be found on the pages.
