Finding Books

Books can be found through MaagNet, the Maag Library online catalog, through the OhioLINK Catalog, or through the Worldcat Catalog. Use MaagNet to locate items available through Maag Library. Use the OhioLINK catalog to locate items available through other OhioLINK institutions. Use Worldcat to locate materials in libraries outside of the OhioLINK system. These items can be requested and delivered to Maag Library for pickup.

Browsing for books

The American History collection is located on Floor 3A (General Collection), in the Reference Room, and in Serials (Journals/Periodicals) on the 6th Floor. All collections are arranged according to the Library of Congress Classification System. Once you locate a book or journal that is useful in one of these areas, you can locate information on the same or similar topics by locating the same call number in the other areas of the library. Finding Articles

History articles are available in print and electronic sources. The information below will help you decide where to begin searching for articles.

Articles in print

History journals that Maag Library receives in print can be located by searching MaagNet, browsing by call number or through the list of History journals received by Maag Library. These journals are located on the sixth floor of Maag Library and are arranged in call number order.

Online Articles

Many history journals are now available through online subscription databases and through the OhioLINK Electronic Journal Center. Various terms can be used to search these databases, including subject, keywords, names, historical periods, etc. Most databases allow access by current YSU faculty, students and staff from off campus, although a few are restricted to in-library use only.   • An Outline of American History
    USINFO delivers information about current U.S. foreign policy and about American life and culture. This site is produced and maintained by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of International Information Programs.

  • Biography of America
    A Biography of America is a telecourse and video series developed by Annenberg Media that presents American history as a living narrative. This series web site lets you delve further into the topics of the 26 video programs.

  • America's Story from America's Library
    America's Story from America's Library was developed from the collections of the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. to teach students of all ages about American History in a fun and exciting way.

  • American Studies Web
    The American Studies Electronic Crossroads (ASEC) is a comprehensive, integrated, information platform on the World Wide Web maintained at Georgetown University by the Center for Electronic Projects in American Culture Studies (CEPACS). ASEC contains pedagogical, scholarly, and institutional information for the international American Studies Community.

  • Making of America
    Making of America (MoA) is a digital library of primary sources in American social history from the antebellum period through reconstruction. The collection is particularly strong in the subject areas of education, psychology, American history, sociology, religion, and science and technology. The collection currently contains approximately 8,500 books and 50,000 journal articles with 19th century imprints.

    Created and hosted by the Independence Hall Association in Philadelphia, USHistory.org contains links to and information about numerous American historical sites.
