Overview

Following is a list of resources that may be used to obtain background and economic information for individual countries. All sources listed (except one print source) are research databases available through Maag Library. These databases may be accessed through this page, or you can go to the Maag Library Home Page and click on Research Databases under Quick Links for access to a complete list of available databases. While in the library, you can access the databases directly. If you are outside the library, use the Off Campus links on this page or see Off Campus Access under Quick Links for information and directions.
Important Note: Not all databases are available off campus.

 

 
Background Information Sources

Background information on land and people, economy, government, history, cultural life, etc.

  • Columbia Encyclopedia   
    Search for country name and choose appropriate category (should be the first one). Also use the Factbook link for each country.
  • Encyclopedia Britannica Online     Off Campus
    Search for country name and choose category.
  • Funk & Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia     Off Campus
    Search for country name, then click on HTML Full Text link under appropriate name.
  • Nations of the World: A Political, Economic & Business Handbook, 2007/2008: Available in Reference Room at call number HC1010 .N37 2007/2008. In-library use only. Country profiles alphabetical by country. (PRINT SOURCE)
  • STAT-USA: Country Background Notes  
    This database is available for use in the Reference Room only; see Reference Desk for password.
    Click on Globus & NTDB. Under Market and Country Research section, choose Country Background Notes. Click on the Background Notes for your country.
  • World Data Analyst Online     Off Campus
    Select your country from dropdown list and click Go.

 
Country Profiles

These include more detail and are usually official publications.

  • Business Source Complete: Country Reports     Off Campus
    Search for country name, then click on Country Reports from list of formats above numbered list of results.
    *The results labeled Country Profile are actually one report split up into sections. If you are printing, be careful of duplicating pages. The same page may appear in more than one section.
    This report is a current Country Profile from The Economist Intelligence Unit.
  • STAT-USA: Country Commercial Guides
    THIS DATABASE IS AVAILABLE FOR USE IN THE REFERENCE ROOM ONLY; SEE REF DESK FOR PASSWORD.
    Click on Globus & NTDB. Under Market and Country Research section, choose Country Commercial Guides (CCGs). Click on the first letter of your country name and scroll down to find links for your country.
  • Mergent Online: Country Profiles     Off Campus Access
    In lower right hand corner of screen, select a country from the dropdown list. This source provides statistical data and a country map.

 


 
Industry Searches Within Countries

Industry profiles, market research reports, etc.

    Search for country name, then click on Industry Profiles from list of formats above numbered list of results.
  • STAT-USA: Industry Sector Analysis Reports
    THIS DATABASE IS AVAILABLE FOR USE IN THE REFERENCE ROOM ONLY; SEE REF DESK FOR PASSWORD.
    Click on Globus & NTDB. Under Market and Country Research section, choose Industry Sector Analysis Reports. Scroll down to your country name and click on plus (+) sign.
  • STAT-USA: International Market Insight Reports   
    THIS DATABASE IS AVAILABLE FOR USE IN THE REFERENCE ROOM ONLY; SEE REF DESK FOR PASSWORD.
    Click on Globus & NTDB. Under Market and Country Research section, choose International Market Insight (IMI) Reports. Scroll down to your country name and click on plus (+) sign.

 
Journal Articles Referencing Countries

To locate relevant articles, you may want to make your keyword searches more specific. For example: Mexico and Economic Conditions, Mexico and Economic Development, etc.

  • EconLit     Off Campus Access
    Search by keyword, then click on Academic Journals, Magazines, or Newspapers to narrow by format.
  • LexisNexis Academic       Off Campus Access
    Click on Business tab on red toolbar, then choose Country Profiles from menu on right hand side of screen. Select Country, Source Type, and Sources from drop down menus. Choose a date range from drop down menu to narrow results, if desired.
