Locating Books

Books can be found through MaagNet, the Maag Library online catalog for items available in Maag, or through the OhioLINK Library Catalog, which locates items available at other OhioLINK institutions. These OhioLink items can be requested and delivered to Maag Library for pickup.

Not sure of a topic? Here are a few Library of Congress Subject Headings with which to start:
  • Earth sciences
  • Ecology
  • Environmental management
  • Environmental protection
  • Environmental sciences
  • Human ecology
  • Population biology

For more help locating resources, see the general help section on Finding Books.

Browsing for books
Environmental science resources are located throughout the library; items in the Reference Room, the Serials (journals) and in the circulating collection are arranged according to the Library of Congress Classification System. Once a useful book or journal is located in one of these areas, use that same call number to locate information on the same or similar topics in the other areas of the library. See Call Numbers and Floor Plans for assistance. Some of the call numbers where Environmental Science information is found include:
  • GE 10 --Environmental science
  • GF 1-22 --Human Ecology
  • QH 540 --Ecology

Locating Articles

Environmental science articles are available in print and electronic sources. The information below will help decide where to begin searching for articles.

Articles in print

Environmental science journals which Maag Library receives in print can be located by searching MaagNet or browsing by call number. These journals are located on the sixth floor of Maag Library and are arranged in Library of Congress call number order.

  • General Science Index Ref Z 7401 G46
An index to the core journal article resources in the sciences, including environmental science.
    In-library use only
Online Articles

Many environmental science journals are available through online subscription databases and through the OhioLINK Electronic Journal Center. Various terms can be used to search these databases including author, subject, keywords, and relevant dates. Most databases allow access by current YSU faculty, students and staff from off campus, although a few are restricted to in-library use only. For more information about connecting from home, see off-campus access.
  • Biological Abstracts/BIOSIS Previews
Abstracts and bibliographic information on biological and medical literature, including international 5500 journals is indexed in this database.
  • Compendex
Compendex is a comprehensive interdisciplinary engineering database, the electronic equivalent of the print Engineering Index. It strives to cover the entire engineering discipline with articles from over 175 areas, including aerospace engineering. Includes or has links to full text.
  • Environment Complete
This database covers ecological, hydrological, environmental and more from over 1200 national and international journals.
  • GeoRef
The database indexes geoscience journal articles, books, maps, conference papers, reports, and theses. The GeoRef database covers the geology of North America from 1785 to the present and the geology of the rest of the world from 1933 to the present. The database includes references to all publications of the U.S. Geological Survey.
  • JSTOR  Off-campus link
Supplies full text articles from the very first volume to the last 3-5 years for approximately 240 titles in arts and sciences. Use the Advanced Search to select subcategories such as aquatic sciences, ecology and evolutionary biology, history of sicence and technology, and paleontology.
  • Science Citation Index Expanded or ISI Web of Science
Current information as well as backfiles to 1900 are found in full text on the Web of Science. ISI Citation Databases include bibliographic information gathered from thousands of scholarly journals. It is indexed so that the researcher can look for specific articles by subject, author, journal, and/or author address. Additionally, it is possible to search the databases for articles that cite a known author or work.

These databases provide a starting point for research; to see other available databases, visit the Research Databases page where searches can be done by subject, database title, or information type.

For additional assistance in finding journals available through Maag Library, use the Maag Journal Finder. You can search for a specific journal by title or ISSN or browse the Earth and Environmental Sciences category.
