Overview

Maag Library provides access to mechanical engineering books, journals, and data through print and online resources. The specific resources listed below are a portion of what is available through the library. For additional assistance Ask a Librarian!

Reference Resources

Use these encyclopedias, dictionaries and almanacs for background information about mechanical engineering and for definitions.

  • Dictionary of engineering acronyms and abbreviations  Ref T11 .K43 1994
Part A identifies acronyms and abbreviations used in science and engineering. Part B identifies periodical title abbreviations.
  • Encyclopedia of energy   Ref TJ163.2 .E394 2004
A six volume set, that provides information about all aspects of energy, with articles written by international contributors.
  • Encyclopedic dictionary of gears and gearing    Ref TJ184 .S76 1995
Includes definitions for materials (copolymer), tools (chuck), and processes (martempering). Computer applications in machine tooling are defined. In addition to gearing terms, acronyms, association names, and personal names are identified. Six appendixes cover the nomenclature for grinding, gaging, hob, gear shaving cutter, milling-cutter, and broaching.
  • Engineering formulas    Ready Ref TA151 .G4713 1997 (Ask at the Reference Desk)
Pocket guide to mathematical and technical formulas.
  • The engineering handbook    Ref TA151 .E424 1996
A reference source for all fields of engineering. In addition to data and formulas, it defines theories and concepts and their application to the field of engineering.
  • Mark's standard handbook for mechanical engineers   Ref TJ151 .S82 1996A
Compendium of practical information, data, principles, standards and practices.
  • Mechanical engineer's reference book    Ref TJ151 .M397 1994
Intended to assist in identifying the basic principles of a topic with references to additional sources.
  • The Wiley engineer's desk reference : a concise guide for the professional engineer    Ref TA151 .H424 1998
Includes mathematics, mechanics, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics and heat transfer, energy sources and the design process.

Locating Books

Books can be found through MaagNet, the Maag Library online catalog, or through the OhioLINK Catalog, which locates items available at other OhioLINK institutions. These items can be requested and delivered to Maag Library for pickup.

Not certain of a topic? Here are a few suggested Library of Congress Subject Headings:
  • Blades
  • Machinery
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Mechanical Movements
  • Mechanics, Applied

For more help locating resources, see Finding Books.

Browsing for books

Mechanical engineering resources are located throughout the library; items in the Reference Room, Serials (journals), and in the circulating collection are arranged according to the Library of Congress Classification System. Once a useful book or journal is located in one of these areas, use the same call number to locate information on the same or similar topics in the other areas of the library. See Call Numbers and Floor Plans for assistance. Some of the call numbers where Mechanical Engineering information can be found include:
  • TA 349-359 --Mechanics of Engineering, Applied Mechanics
  • TJ 1-1570 --Mechanical Engineering and Machinery
  • TL 1-480 --Motor Vehicles-Automotive Engineering
  • TL 500-4050 --Aerodynamics

Locating Articles

Mechanical engineering articles are available in print and electronic sources. The information below will help decide where to begin a search for articles.

Articles in print

Mechanical engineering journals that Maag Library receives in print can be located by searching MaagNet or browsing call number. These journals are located on the sixth floor of Maag Library and are arranged in Library of Congress (LC) call number order.
  • General Science Index,  Ref Z 7401 G46
An index to the core journal article resources in the sciences, including mechanical engineering.
    In-library use only

Online Articles

Many mechanical engineering journals are now available through online subscription databases and through the OhioLINK Electronic Journal Center. Various terms can be used to search these databases, including author, subject, keywords and relevant dates. Most databases allow access by current YSU faculty, students and staff from off campus, although a few are restricted to in-library use only. For more information about connecting from home, see off-campus access.
  • Compendex 1969-
Compendex is a comprehensive interdisciplinary engineering database, the electronic equivalent of the print Engineering Index. It strives to cover the entire engineering discipline with articles from over 175 areas, including aerospace engineering. Includes or has links to full text.
  • Historical Compendex 1884 to 1968
This archive covers engineering literature from 1884 to 1968.
  • Inspec 1969-
This database covers scientific and technical literature in physics, electrical engineering and related electronics fields, as well as production, and manufacturing and mechanical engineering.
  • Inspect Archive, 1898 to 1968
This archive covers over 70 years of international scientific and technical literature.
  • JSTOR    Off-campus link
Supplies full text articles from the very first volume to the last 3-5 years for approximately 240 titles in arts and sciences. Use the Advanced Search to select subcategories such as aquatic sciences, ecology and evolutionary biology, history of sicence and technology, and paleontology.
  • Science Citation Index Expanded or ISI Web of Science
Current information as well as backfiles to 1900 are found in full text on the Web of Science. ISI Citation Databases include bibliographic information gathered from thousands of scholarly journals. It is indexed so that the researcher can look for specific articles by subject, author, journal, and/or author address. Additionally, it is possible to search the databases for articles that cite a known author or work.
These databases provide a starting point for research. To see other available databases, visit the Research Databases page. Of particular interest would be the following:
  • Dissertation Abstracts
Provides citations and abstracts to theses and dissertations to colleges and universities in North America and Europe.
  • Electronic Theses and Dissertations Center (OhioLINK)
Online theses and disssertations from Ohio graduate students from participating Ohio colleges and universities.
While some dissertations may be available through Interlibrary Loan, this is not always the case. Not all holding libraries not loan dissertations and theses through ILL. In some instances there may be a fee.
  • Electronic Book Center (OhioLINK)
Scholarly full-text books from several publishers.
  • Electronic Journal Center (EJC)
Full-text journals from OhioLINK electronic journal subscriptions. Currently includes over 6000 scholarly journals in a variety of disciplines. To best benefit from this database, use the Engineering Category and select either the Materials Science or Mechanical Engineering sub-categories.

For additional assistance in finding journals available through Maag Library, use the Maag Journal Finder. You can search for a specific journal by title or ISSN or browse the Engineering and Applied Sciences category.
