Periodical Indexes |

-
Go to the Reference Room, and
choose an appropriate index for your assignment. General indexes like the
Readers'
Guide to Periodical Literature, Social Sciences Index, and the
General
Science Index as well as more subject-specific indexes like
Social
Work Abstracts, Criminal Justice Periodical Abstracts,
Film
Literature Index and Nutrition Abstracts and Reviews are located
on the index tables in the Reference Room.
|
-
Browse a current volume for
a topic that interests you or that fulfills your instructor's assignment.
|
-
Select a subject that has many
references under it. That way, you are more likely to locate material in
Maag Library.
|
-
Consult MaagNet
or a Periodicals Holdings List to see if Maag Library owns
the periodicals listed in the references. If Maag owns the journal, write
down the citation to the article as well as the journal's call number.
|
-
If you need more information,
conduct a search in an electronic database available through the Maag Library
homepage or on CD-ROM. These include general databases, such as Periodical
Abstracts, or subject-specific databases, such as Medline, ERIC, or ABI/Inform.

Consult the listing of current
periodical subscriptions by subject. To locate current magazines, newspapers,
or journals know the name and call number of the periodicals you are looking
for. Go to the Serials Department on the lower level of Maag Library and
ask for them at the Serials Desk.
|
-
Browse through current issues
of a magazine or journal, and select a topic that interests you or that
fits your instructor's assignment.
|
-
Go to the Reference Room, and
consult an on-line, CD-ROM or print index to locate other references on
the same topic.

| Hint: To make
your paper or speech interesting, try to avoid topics like gun control,
abortion, and AIDS, unless you can add some new insight to the information. |
