Physical Processing of Music Scores
This is the same procedure that students follow when processing scores (printed music).
The following procedures are broken into three types of scores depending on the type of binding that has been applied.
- HARD BOUND SCORES
The score is bound in buckram, like a book. The covers are HARD and the composer/title
of the works is printed on the spine. (You may find the "Heckman Bindery" sticker on the inside of the back cover).
- Processing items just as books are processed.
- Add tattle tape to inconspicious place in the score. Be careful not to place it where the actual music is since musicians will open the score and attempt to "get" the page to lay flat.
- Stamp in the usual places.
- If there is a pocket with scores in the pocket, stamp the individual parts. Also, place tattle tapes in those individual parts. Again in an inconspicious place. Also, if the Cataloger has provided spine labels for the parts, attach them too.
- GREEN PAM BOUND SCORES
- The tattle tape security strip is usually already in the "binding" of the score itself. If the strip has been forgotten, there will be a note informing you of this.
- Place the spine label on the front, lower left hand corner of the score. Place the spine label on the actual pressboard, not on the green "Cambric" tape or green "cloth" of the spine. Use a label protector. (You may wish to cut the label protector in half).
- Stamp the score with a property stamp on the following places:
- End sheet (blank grey/beige)
- Title page.
- First page of score with music (at the bottom center) (Caption page)
- Last page of score.
- Inside back of pam binding, at bottom center.
- Date Due slip. Attach on inside back cover underneath the barcode, slightly down from it.
- If there is a pocket with parts, place the spine label, property stamp and date due slip on the pocket itself.
- Parts in pocket (when present):
- Stamp: cover, end sheet, title page, caption page, last page.
- Attach spine labels to parts when provided by Catalog Librarian.
- Tattle tape should already be in the spine binding.
- MUSIC IN POCKET ONLY PAM BINDERS OR PORTFOLIOS
- The tattle tape should already be included in the spine binding.
- Stamp all parts with YSU stamp:
- Front cover
- End sheet
- Title page
- Caption page
- Last page
- Date due slip is placed on R.H. pocket. The pocket will already contain a barcode and Neon Magenta label with "Check part..." message for circulation staff. NEVER COVER MAGENTA LABELS. For portfolios, place the date due slip on the inside of the cover (L.H. side).
- Attach spine label to pam binder or in the case of a portfolio, to the spine if it will fit. Always attach label protectors. (Always in the lower left hand corner.)
- Stamp the pam binder/portfolio with the YSU property stamp on the inside. (Use some judgement where will it fit and be seen.)
