Cataloging with LC Copy at the Terminal

  1. Log on to OCLC with your authorization.

  2. Search Keys:

SEE APPROPRIATE PRISM MANUAL or SEARCH SHEET.

  3. Type a search key and depress the ¶ (F11 key). Note the following:
    1.
    2. Check 040 field first. If not DLC ‡c DLC, check for the presence of the 042 field (Authentication code).

    3. If the 042 contains any of the authentication codes below, continue cataloging with this procedure.
    4.
      lccopycat lcllh
      lccopycat-nm lcnuc
      lchlas lcode
lcllh lc – be careful of NLC (Canadian cataloging)

    5. If there is no 042 or the 042 contains any of the other codes, follow Cataloging with OCLC Member Input Copy.

    6. Institution symbol YNG:

      1. If YNG does not appear on the screen, proceed with cataloging.

      2. If YNG symbol does appear on the screen, note call number on order card and lay aside. This is probably a second copy or there is a cataloging problem.

    7. Note in fixed field:

      1. BLvl (bibliographical level). If BLvl is m (monograph), proceed with cataloging.

If BLvl is s (serial), lay aside for serial cataloger.

      2. ELvl (encoding level). If ELvl is blank, proceed with cataloging. If ELvl is 8, the record is a CIP (Cataloging in Publication) and will not have the collation statement or references to the bibliographic notes. Add the data and transmit to OCLC. If the DLC copy has Elvl 4 treat as LC copy.

  4. Note in variable fields:

    1. 040      Cataloging Source. DLC ‡c DLC is LC cataloging. (See above note regarding 042 Authentication field.

    2.
    3. 050      Check the 2nd indicator. If this indicator is 4 (Assigned by agency other than LC), accept the call number, adding an “x” to the date. (See CP 250 for further information).
