Material Type (MAT TYPE) Codes Used in III

Background: The fixed field in an Innovative Record MAT TYPE: is used in limiting a search on the OPAC. It is very useful for patrons needing to limit based on the format of the materials. That is, a score versus a sound recording; a monograph versus a serial. This fixed field is loaded from the “Leader” in the bibliographic record when the record is transferred from OCLC. In OCLC the fixed field Type: usually contains the appropriate code.

Scope: This instruction sheet has been created since the MAT TYPE codes have been updated in accordance with the USMARC21 format and also with the local practices and system limitations. In some cases, the code that we use in MAT TYPE is not “extracted” from the Type code in the OCLC record. It must be manually coded usually based on the 007 information field. This is true for compact disc sound recordings (musical not spoken), serials, and microforms.

  1. The following table will inform the Catalog Department of what codes are automatically loaded correctly, and what codes will need to be manually input. (You can instruct the loader program to place a code in the record when exporting from OCLC using the 949 tags. See CP592 Transferring OCLC to Maagnet, Page 2. It is b2= command that does the work).
